One out of three people today have allergies, asthma or a breathing disorder. This recent change has to be related to environmental issues. One major change is in the way our homes are insulated today. Our domiciles are much better insulated than ever before.
Double pane windows, wall and attic insulation through out the home has created a much more air tight environment than ever before. The energy savings are significant however the resulting poor indoor air quality and the effects on heath is not fully understood.
Air purification equipment sales have skyrocketed along with the sale of vacuum cleaners out fitted with HEPA air filters. On the surface the idea of removing lung damaging dust particles and dust mite fecal material along with pollen from the air exhausted by our vacuum cleaner sounds like a great idea.
Sales of Hoovers, Dirt Devils, Bissell HEPA filter ( filter that is suppose to trap 99.97% of air borne particles.03 in size) equipped vacuums along with other brands too numerous to mention have sky rocketed. Particularly vacuums that claim to be made especially to deal with pets and the cleaning needs associated with them.
Most of these products involve a dirt cup device that is suppose to capture and store the filth these machines vacuum. The products tend to be very popular due to the low prices and wide distribution through the mass merchant big box retail stores.
These models have poor pre filter systems which allow large raw dirt and hair to come in contact with the HEPA filter designed to trap microscopic items resulting in a clogged filter. The effects on the indoor air is monstrous the beater bar continues to spin pulverizing dirt and beating debris into pulp.
This takes place while the vacuum motor continues to strain for air pulling raw dirt, dust mites and pollen around the clogged filters blowing dust back into the air that we breath. This explosion of filth can remain suspended in the air for several hours.
So what are we to do never vacuum, move outdoors and live in a tent?
Worry not, you don't have to join the campfire girls just invest in a better vacuum cleaner. Look at products that have better pre filter systems and that are better sealed. Central vacuum systems are excellent investments if you spend a little time with a dealer who can help educate you on the fine details of the units.
If you prefer a portable unit over the more expensive central vacuum systems look at the Miele, Lindhuas, Electrolux or Riccar vacuum products as they have some of the better designed products on the market. Indoor air and your health are great reasons to invest in a good cleaning product.
Just what price do you put on heath?
